A part of Bertie’s VICISSITUDES collection.

“We are never fully ready for the important changes. This photograph puts shape to that experience; we are not ready to hatch yet the comfort of our current situation is but an illusion. The shell is a transparent glass pane so we cannot deny what is within. The environment is cold and sharp, thus we cannot hatch yet. We put trust in our body to tell us when it will be safe.”

This photograph is paired with the “Moon” illustration. Together they make up the first step of change: the initial recognition within, the brewing, and the wait.

Bertie came out as non-binary this year. These prints are reflective of that experience.

VICISSITUDES is discomfort through transformation. It’s the magnetism of change and yet the resistance to it. The collection portrays the shapes of this experience: not ready, scared, itching, listening, jumping. The ground is in motion beneath our feet but we are not wearing shoes. Will we run or fall?

The photographs in the VICISSITUDES collection feature the unceded, never-surrendered territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, who have a historical and ongoing relationship to this land. May this serve as a reminder to walk respectfully on this land and to actively dismantle the impacts of colonial systems here.
